Robert "Gene" Smith, 64, of Burlington, died at 1:25 PM Sunday, August 9, 2009, at his home.

Born July 12, 1945, in Burlington, he was the son of Robert William and Edna Clara Rice Smith.
|
Gene had worked for Nelson Trucking and Farmers and Merchants Bank and Trust for 18 years. He retired in 1998.
He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He enjoyed yard and garage sales, especially stuffed animals and model cars. He was a loving and devoted son who took care of his parents up until their deaths. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include two uncles, Wayne (Darlene) Stimpson of Burlington, and Harold (Marge) Rice of Sperry, IA; two aunts, Ruby Engel of Burlington, and Mary Lou Yedlik of Cedar Rapids, IA; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Visitation will be from noon until 5:00 PM Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home. There will be no family visitaiton.
The Funeral Service for Mr. Smith will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Jerry Rigdon officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established.
